Teen mom who chose son’s birth over cancer treatment dies

Life can be incredibly beautiful at times, but it can also be unimaginably cruel. It is this unpredictability that makes life such a journey, filled with moments of joy and heartbreak.

Brianna Rawlings was just 18 years old and 17 weeks pregnant when she received the devastating news that would change her life forever. What doctors initially dismissed as pregnancy-related symptoms turned out to be something far worse—a rare and aggressive blood cancer known as NK cell leukemia.

Almost halfway through her pregnancy, Brianna was faced with an impossible choice: terminate her pregnancy and begin the treatment that could save her life, or continue carrying her baby to term and risk her own survival. With incredible bravery, she chose to forgo treatment and focus on bringing her son into the world, hoping he would live a long and happy life.

Her sacrifice, however, came at a tragic cost. Despite her strength and determination, Brianna’s decision ultimately led to the loss of both mother and child. Her son, Kyden, was born three months premature through an emergency C-section after Brianna contracted a severe blood infection. The infection posed a serious threat to both mother and child, and doctors had no choice but to deliver Kyden early.

For 12 precious days, Brianna held her baby boy, counted his tiny fingers and toes, and spoke to him just as she had when he was growing inside her. Those moments, though brief, were the most meaningful of her life. In an interview with Femail, as reported by the Daily Mail, Brianna shared: “Those 12 days I was able to spend with my baby boy Kyden, holding him, counting his toes and fingers, and talking to him like I would when he was in my tummy. They were just so special. They were the best 12 days of my life!”

Despite losing her son, Brianna refused to give up. She found strength in his memory and vowed to fight for her own survival. “It’s been very hard, long, exhausting, and painful,” she admitted. “Even though Kyden is no longer with us, he gave me the strength to go on and beat this. I want to beat this horrible disease. I believe I can do this, and I made a promise to my son.”

For a time, it seemed like Brianna was winning the battle. Her blood levels showed signs of improvement, and she worked tirelessly to regain strength in her legs, determined to overcome the disease. But fate had other plans. Her condition suddenly worsened, and doctors had to cancel a scheduled bone marrow transplant that was to be donated by her brother.

Instead, she was introduced to a trial drug that doctors hoped would increase her chances of survival. The treatment, however, came at a steep price—$3,000 per week. Brianna’s family, determined to save her, managed to raise the necessary funds so she could begin treatment. They succeeded in securing two rounds of the drug before the cancer ultimately took her life.

On December 29, 2018, at just 19 years old, Brianna Rawlings lost her battle with leukemia. She fought with a courage and dignity that few could ever match. Her story is one of love, sacrifice, and unwavering strength.

Brianna’s decision to prioritize her son’s life over her own is a testament to the depth of a mother’s love. She knew the risks but made the ultimate sacrifice to give Kyden a chance at life, even if it was a short one. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of how precious life is and how far a mother will go for her child.

Her family, friends, and all those who followed her journey were heartbroken by her passing, but her legacy lives on. The love she showed for her son and the strength with which she faced her illness will forever be remembered.
