Photographer captures bride’s hidden illness, and wedding takes horrific turn

Jill Hadad Hawkins, like many brides, anticipated her wedding day to be the happiest and most memorable day of her life. However, what was supposed to be a joyous occasion quickly turned into a nightmare that neither she nor her family could have expected.

The morning of her wedding, Jill was filled with excitement and nervous energy, just like any bride-to-be. But beneath the joy and anticipation, she was experiencing a sharp, unexplained pain in her stomach. At first, she dismissed it as nothing more than typical pre-wedding jitters, chalking it up to the stress and emotions of the big day. Determined to make it through the ceremony, Jill put on a brave face, smiled for the cameras, and continued with her wedding preparations.

As the day progressed, however, the pain did not subside. In fact, it only intensified. Despite this, Jill persevered, determined to walk down the aisle and say her vows to her soon-to-be husband. Somehow, through sheer willpower, she managed to stand at the altar, say “I do,” and share what should have been one of the happiest moments of her life.

But shortly after the ceremony, things took a horrifying turn.

Following the wedding reception, Jill’s condition worsened, and she was rushed to the hospital. Her severe stomach pain had reached an unbearable level, and it was clear that something was seriously wrong.

A Medical Emergency Unfolds

Jill had a history of ulcerative colitis, a form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) that affects the large intestine and rectum. During her teenage years, she had undergone multiple major surgeries to address the condition. At the time, Jill believed that the surgeries had resolved her health issues, and she had put those experiences behind her.

According to the Mayo Clinic, ulcerative colitis is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract. The symptoms often develop gradually over time, rather than appearing suddenly, which may have contributed to Jill’s initial belief that her wedding-day pain was unrelated to her past condition.

But this time, the pain wasn’t from ulcerative colitis. When Jill arrived at the hospital, doctors discovered a more immediate and dangerous issue—a twist in her intestines that had cut off her blood supply. Dr. James Yoo, chief of colorectal surgery at Tufts Medical Center, performed an emergency procedure to save her life. He explained that the twisting of her intestines, which caused a blockage, was an incredibly rare and life-threatening situation.

“She could have died from that,” Dr. Yoo said in an interview with WCVB. The doctor emphasized that nothing Jill had done caused the emergency, calling it “just bad luck.” Fortunately, the surgery was a success, and Dr. Yoo reassured Jill that she would go on to live “happily ever after.”

A Close Call on Her Wedding Day

Reflecting on the terrifying turn of events, Jill opened up about her experience, still shaken by how close she came to tragedy. “It’s really hard to come to terms with the fact that I could have died on my wedding night,” she told WCVB. “But that’s the reality.”

What started as the happiest day of her life became a stark reminder of how fragile life can be. Her wedding was captured beautifully by photographers, but hidden behind her radiant smile was a bride who was silently suffering from an illness no one could see. Thankfully, her story didn’t end in tragedy, but it was a powerful reminder of how quickly life can change.

Jill’s story resonated with many as it was shared online, reminding people of the importance of health and the unpredictable nature of life. Despite the ordeal, she remains hopeful for her future, supported by her husband and loved ones as she recovers.
