The 14-year-olds became Britain’s youngest parents

Back in 2010, April Webster and Nathan Fishbourne made headlines across the UK when they became the country’s youngest parents. At just 13 years old, April became pregnant, and by the time their son Jamie was born, both had turned 14.

Their story captured public attention, sparking debates, judgment, and curiosity. Many wondered how two teenagers could navigate the responsibilities of parenthood at such a young age. As time passed and the media moved on, what happened to April, Nathan, and their son?

A Life-Changing Discovery

April and Nathan’s story began as classmates at St Cenydd School in Caerphilly, South Wales. Their teenage romance took a serious turn when April discovered she was pregnant just one day before her 14th birthday.

The news shocked both families. April had not told her parents about her relationship with Nathan because she felt “too embarrassed.” The couple admitted they had not used protection, with Nathan saying he had tried contraception once but “didn’t like it.”

Nathan’s parents, Julie and Ron, were initially furious.

“I had a real go at him and told him he had been stupid. But we can’t undo what has happened and will now accept Jamie into our family. There’s no way we’ll turn our backs on him,” Nathan’s father, Ron, told The Sun at the time.

Despite the initial shock, both families came together to support the young couple, knowing they needed all the help they could get. April’s mother, Maria, who was 36 years old at the time, stood by her daughter’s decision.

“It was a big shock at first, but we let April make the decision on whether to go through with it,” Maria shared.

The Birth of Baby Jamie

Jamie was born in November 2010 via a dramatic cesarean section. Weighing 8lbs 14oz, he had a challenging start to life due to a malformed esophagus, making feeding difficult. Fortunately, doctors were able to perform an operation, and after 11 days in the hospital, Jamie was declared healthy and was finally able to go home.

By the time British tabloids got hold of the story, Jamie was already four weeks old. At that point, he was living with April at her parents’ home, where her 17-year-old sister, Robyn, helped out by feeding him bottles.

Nathan, on the other hand, lived a few miles away with his own parents.

Navigating Teenage Parenthood

Despite their unconventional circumstances, April was determined to be the best mother she could be.

“Jamie wasn’t planned, but I’m going to be a great mom for him. He’s perfect, and I’m going to give him everything he ever wants,” she said at the time.

Meanwhile, Nathan had his own ideas about co-parenting, suggesting that Jamie spend weekdays with April and weekends with him. However, uncertainty loomed over their relationship.

“We’re having a cooling-off period,” April admitted in 2010, adding that she wasn’t sure if their relationship would last.

Life After the Headlines

As many predicted, April and Nathan eventually went their separate ways. By 2014, April confirmed that they had broken up three years earlier and were no longer in contact.

“I broke up with Nathan about three years ago; we’re not really in contact,” she shared. “I don’t really want to be in contact with him. When I first had Jamie, I hoped we might stay together. There are no regrets, though.”

April had originally planned to continue her education, but she never took her GCSEs, the equivalent of a U.S. high school diploma.

“I’m not in school or working. I’m just looking after Jamie, and everything is going amazingly with him,” she said.

Thankfully, April’s family remained supportive, ensuring she had help raising Jamie.

“My mom and sister love having Jamie in the house. He’s fun. He goes to school in the mornings, which gives me time to chill out. I might go to college and take some exams when Jamie is older. I’m not planning on having another baby soon, though,” she added.

Where Are They Now?

Today, April’s life has completely transformed. She is now a proud mother of three, raising Jamie alongside her other children, Rowan David and Ava Lianne. She has also found love again and is in a happy relationship with Jake Jones.

A look at April’s social media shows how far she has come. Now 28 years old, she goes by the name April Lianna and appears to be thriving.

Nathan’s life has also taken a positive turn. In February 2023, he got engaged to his partner, Samantha, and has since built his own family, raising several children.

Overcoming Challenges and Moving Forward

Teen pregnancy brings immense challenges, from societal judgment to the pressures of raising a child at such a young age. However, April and Nathan have both managed to build fulfilling lives despite the odds.

Jamie, now a teenager himself, has grown up with two loving parents, even if they are no longer together. It’s heartwarming to see that both April and Nathan have remained involved in their son’s life, proving that with support and determination, young parents can overcome adversity and build happy futures.

A Story of Resilience

April and Nathan’s journey is a reminder that teen parents face unique struggles, but they also have the ability to create positive lives for themselves and their children.

It’s inspiring to see how April has flourished as a mother, and it’s great to know that Nathan has also found happiness.

Their story, once a headline sensation, is now one of growth, resilience, and transformation. We wish them and their families all the best in the future!
